Chelsea booked their place in the FA Cup final for the second year in a row after second half goals from Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata secured a 2-0 win over Southampton at Wembley on Sunday.
In the first half, Chelsea had a high amount of possession throughout the match, as they looked to break down Southampton’s deep defensive block in the final third, while needing to control Long and Austin during counter attacks.
While in the second half they started with a goal, Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud received the ball from Eden Hazard and jinked his way past two Southampton players in a crowded area before he stabbed the ball home.
Olivier Giroud won the FA Cup three times as an Arsenal player and his fondness for the competition continued against the Saints with the crucial first goal.
It ensured that the France striker has had a hand in 22 goals in 26 appearances in the competition since January 2012, with 15 goals and seven assists, it’s more than any other player in the competition during that period.
Alvaro Morata then came off the bench to replace Olivier Giroud with 10 mintues to go and Conte’s decision to take off Giroud for Morata paid off when the Spaniard sealed safe passage with Chelsea’s second when he headed in at the back post from Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross in the 82nd minute.
Alvaro Morata has now scored nine headed goals in all competitions this season; two more than any other Premier League player.
Chelsea have reached the FA Cup final for the 13th time, and have got there in successive campaigns for the first time since 2009 and 2010.
The seven-time Cup winners will now face Manchester United in the Final on Saturday 19 May at the same stadium in what will be a repeat of the 2007 showpiece, after the Jose Mourinho’s side defeated Tottenham 2-1 in their semi-final match.
While Southampton will return to Premier League action next Saturday to host Bournemouth.
