Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said his players were “masters in complication” after their defeat by bottom side West Brom at Old Trafford.
The result saw West Brom secured the Premier League title for Manchester City and boosted their faint survival hopes with an unlikely 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
After failing to beat their neighbours to clinch the Premier League title last weekend, Manchester City would have settled for this as a decent second best. The rivals would have watched and learned of Manchester United’s demise at home to West Brom with something approaching incredulous glee.
West Brom secured the win thanks to a Jay Rodriguez header from Chris Brunt’s corner as the home side failed to clear their lines.
United’s best chance of the game was a Romelu Lukaku header, which was superbly saved by West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster.
West Brom remain nine points from safety at the foot of the table but a timely first win in 11 leaves them with the slimmest of chances of avoiding relegation with four games to play.
